Lahore:  A long-awaited moment of joy has arrived for families and wildlife lovers across Punjab giraffes have officially returned to Lahore Zoo after an eight-year absence. A new pair of the iconic African mammals arrived from South Africa this week, revitalizing the zoo’s giraffe enclosure, which had remained incomplete following the death of its male giraffe in 2022.

But the celebration doesn’t stop there. In a historic first, Lahore Safari Park has also received giraffes, expanding its animal family and making the gentle giants accessible to more visitors than ever before.

This milestone comes after the lifting of a two-year ban on animal imports, previously imposed due to substandard conditions and outdated protocols in Punjab’s zoos and animal parks. Since then, Punjab’s wildlife department has introduced sweeping reforms updating its legislation and improving welfare standards to meet international best practices.

Officials say the return of the giraffes symbolizes more than just the arrival of new animals it represents renewed global trust in Punjab’s wildlife management and a revival of public engagement with conservation efforts.

“Today is not just about two giraffes,” said a senior zoo official. “It’s about restoring a connection between our people, our children, and the natural world.”

With the laughter of children once again echoing through zoo enclosures, Punjab takes a proud step forward in wildlife conservation one long neck at a time.
