ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Monday suspended the Islamabad High Court (IHC) order barring Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri from judicial work.

Justice Jahangiri challenged the interim order of IHC barring him from judicial work till the judge of SJC in his degree case.

During the hearing, senior lawyer Muneer A. Malik argued that the order restraining Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri disregarded the law and failed to meet the requirements of justice.

He stressed that this was the first instance in which a two-member-high court bench had restrained one of its own judges from judicial work.

Justice Jahangiri, present in court, stated: “I will go today and hear cases.”

Multiple bar councils, including the Islamabad Bar Council and District Bar, also sought to become parties to the proceedings.

Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail remarked that the case before the Supreme Court was limited to the High Court’s interim order, noting that the Supreme Court had already held that a sitting judge cannot be barred from judicial work.

It is pertinent to mention here that in July 2024, University of Karachi through a series of official letters revealed Islamabad High Court Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri’s degree as allegedly fake.

According to detailed reports, Justice Jahangiri had acquired his LL.B degree from the University of Karachi via Government Islamia Law College in 1991, but under suspicious circumstances involving two different enrollment numbers.

Justice Jahangiri initially passed LL.B Part One in 1989 under Enrollment No. AIL 5968, registered in the name of Tariq Jahangiri, son of Muhammad Akram. Subsequently, he passed LL.B Part Two in 1991 with Enrollment No. AIL 7124/87, listed as Tariq Mehmood, son of Qazi Muhammad Akram.

However, the university records indicate that Enrollment No. AIL 5968 was originally assigned to Imtiaz Ahmad, son of Muhammad Elahia. The same enrollment number and the second number, AIL 7124, were fraudulently used under the names Tariq Mehmood and Tariq Jahangiri.
