ICC suspends USA cricket membership over governance issues

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has suspended USA Cricket’s membership with immediate effect.

This decision, announced after an ICC Board meeting, follows a year-long review of the organization.

The ICC cited “repeated and continued breaches” of its obligations as a member.

The suspension stems from USA Cricket’s failure to establish a functional governance system.

It also failed to secure recognition from the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC).

The governing body also highlighted actions that caused “reputational damage” to the sport in the country.

National teams remain eligible to compete

Despite the suspension, there is a silver lining for American cricket players.

The ICC has confirmed that USA’s men’s and women’s national teams will remain eligible to participate in ICC tournaments.

This includes preparations for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where cricket is set to make its return.

The ICC will temporarily oversee the management of USA teams to ensure that player development and high-performance programs are not disrupted by the governance issues.

This is a crucial step to safeguard the sport’s growth in a key market.

Normalisation committee to oversee reforms

To lift the suspension, the ICC will form a “Normalisation Committee.”

This committee will be tasked with implementing essential reforms in governance, operations, and structure.

The ICC has described the suspension as “unfortunate but necessary.”

It emphasized that the move is aimed at protecting the long-term future of cricket in the United States.

The Normalisation Committee will monitor the progress of these reforms.

Its work is essential for the restoration of USA Cricket’s membership and the continued expansion of the sport in the country.
