A 5.9 magnitude earthquake hit Northeastern state of Assam, India around 4:00pm Pakistan Standard Time (PKT).

The earthquake was recorded at a depth of five km and the epicentre was in Udalguri district.

According to Indian reports, no major damage was reported.

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa said there has been no report of any major damage or loss of life. “We are actively monitoring the situation,” he said.

Many residents rushed out of their homes in panic, with one resident saying, “it felt like it would never stop”.

It is pertinent to mention that Assam is one of India’s most seismically active regions.

The region has witnessed some of the strongest earthquakes in recorded history, including the 1950 Assam–Tibet quake (magnitude 8.6).

Earthquakes in recent weeks

Earlier, an earthquake of 6.2 magnitude struck parts of southeastern Afghanistan and 5.9 magnitude tremors were felt in Pakistan’s Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and many other cities of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) provinces, on Thursday (Sep 4).

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

Aftershocks were also felt in India’s New Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir.

A deadly earthquake in Afghanistan early this week killed more than 2,200 people in Afghanistan.
