Islamabad and adjoining areas faced repeated earthquakes in 2025, approximate 11 times as per publicly available records.
Publicly available reports show several moderate quakes across the year. However, most events originated in northern Pakistan or the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan, a known seismic zone for the region.
January to April activity
- On February 15 a magnitude 4.7 earthquake struck southeast of Islamabad at a depth of about 30 km. Shaking was light and short but widely noticed in homes and offices.
- On April 12 a magnitude 5.5 earthquake hit northern Pakistan with an epicentre northwest of Rawalpindi. Tremors were felt across the twin cities and nearby districts. In addition, some residents moved outdoors as a precaution. While, no major damage was reported by local officials.
May to August activity
- On August 3 a magnitude 5.1 earthquake occurred about 15 km east southeast of Rawat. The shallow depth near 10 km produced sharper motion in the Islamabad Rawalpindi belt. Furniture rattled and calls to helplines spiked.
- On August 29 a magnitude 5.4 earthquake in the Hindu Kush sent waves into Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the federal capital. Depth estimates ranged from 92 to 215 km. The larger depth reduced surface impact yet produced a long rolling feel.
September sequence and safety
- On September 1 a magnitude 6.0 earthquake originated in the Hindu Kush. Strong tremors were felt across Islamabad, with several aftershocks near magnitude 5.2 later the same day.
- On September 2 a magnitude 5.4 event in southeastern Afghanistan again reached the capital.
- On September 4 a magnitude 5.9 Hindu Kush quake brought another round of strong shaking for Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
How to protect citizens in frequent earthquake episodes in Islamabad
- These episodes underline the need for readiness in schools, offices, and markets.
- Residents should secure heavy items, keep emergency kits, and follow guidance from NDMA and district authorities.
- Regular drills, verified information sources, and building code compliance remain the best protection for the capital.
