Web Desk: Wrestler Inam Butt could face disciplinary action after reportedly returning a positive doping test at the Asian Beach Games in China earlier this year, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The two-time Asian Beach Games gold medallist underwent testing during the competition in April. The result was subsequently reported as positive, raising the possibility of a ban if anti-doping authorities reject his explanation and supporting medical evidence.
However, people close to the wrestler said the medication involved was prescribed to treat an eye-related condition and was not taken to improve athletic performance, increase strength or gain a competitive advantage.
According to sources, Butt has informed the World Anti-Doping Agency about the medication he used before the Games.
The wrestler has also submitted medical scans and a prescription from his doctor as part of his explanation, the sources said.
They added that the medication had been approved for Butt’s use by the relevant anti-doping authorities for a period of one year.
The case remains under review, with discussions between Butt and anti-doping officials continuing.
The reported positive test does not by itself establish that Butt intentionally violated anti-doping rules. Authorities must assess his explanation, the substance involved and the medical circumstances surrounding its use before determining whether disciplinary action is warranted.
If the authorities conclude that his explanation and medical documentation do not adequately account for the adverse finding, Butt could face a suspension.
For now, the wrestler remains engaged in the review process as he seeks to establish that the medication was used for legitimate medical treatment rather than performance enhancement.
Butt is one of Pakistan’s best-known wrestlers and has won two Asian Beach Games gold medals.
The case is yet to reach a final resolution, and no definitive sanction has been announced. The outcome will depend on the anti-doping authorities’ assessment of the evidence and the circumstances behind the positive test.
