Winter solstice brings longest night today

⏱ 2 minute read
Winter solstice

Today, like many countries in the Northern Hemisphere, Pakistan will be witnessing the shortest day and longest night of the year. The winter solstice takes effect nationwide today. A key season transition is marked by this astronomical event.

The daylight will last for 10 hours and 10 minutes in Lahore and nearby areas today. The nighttime today will be as long as 13 hours and 50 minutes. The other cities in Pakistan will also be experiencing slight variations.

December 21 brings the shortest daylight period of the year across the Northern Hemisphere. The sun appears at its lowest position in the sky. The result of this is that nights become noticeably longer.

The reason for the winter solstice is Earth’s tilted axis. This causes Earth’s one hemisphere to lean farthest away from the sun. Due to this, the sunlight spreads over a wider area and reduces daytime duration.

The sun reaches the southernmost position at this point. The sun will be directly above the Tropic of Capricorn. It will appear to pause their briefly. After that, it will gradually move northward again.

After the solstice, the daylight hours will slowly increase every day. It will signal the gradual approach of spring. Colder weather will persist for some time, and then spring will come.
