Trump plans to restore Iran’s internet

⏱ 2 minute read

US President Donald Trump said that he intends to talk to billionaire Elon Musk regarding the restoration of internet services in Iran.

When asked whether he would contact Musk’s company SpaceX, which provides satellite internet service under the name Starlink and has been used in Iran before, Trump told reporters that Elon Musk is “very good at this kind of thing” and that he has “a very good company.”

Internet shutdowns in Iran since have severely disrupted the flow of information, while the protests are being described as the largest demonstrations against the country’s religious leadership since 2022.

It appears that Musk has rebuilt his relationship with the Trump administration. This month, Musk and Trump were seen dining together at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort, while Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is scheduled to visit a SpaceX facility in Texas.

Musk has supported providing Starlink to help Iranians bypass government restrictions. During the 2022 protests, the Biden administration also contacted Musk to help establish Starlink in Iran after nationwide demonstrations erupted following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in police custody.

Starlink satellite service has also been used in other areas affected by unrest or conflict, such as Ukraine, where Musk ordered the shutdown of Starlink service during a major Ukrainian military operation in 2022.
