Web Desk: Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi announced the formation of a new cricket team, Rawalpindi Tigers, aiming to develop local talent and eventually secure a place in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
Meanwhile, Abbasi announced that open trials for the Rawalpindi Tigers will begin on Feb. 14 and continue on Feb. 15, offering local youth a chance to showcase their skills.
Speaking at a press conference in Rawalpindi alongside Lahore Qalandars Chief Executive Officer Atif Rana, Abbasi said the Rawalpindi Tigers would be developed as a team meeting international standards. He added that the long-term plan includes seeking the franchise’s inclusion in the PSL.
Abbasi said the team would recruit only young players holding a Rawalpindi domicile, underlining a merit-based selection process. He noted that sports facilities have been expanded in schools and colleges to support aspiring athletes and provide them with access to a larger professional platform.
In addition, Abbasi said the Lahore Qalandars would mentor the new team and provide professional training to selected players. He also announced plans to form a women’s team to promote female participation in cricket. Separately, he said an international-standard squash court has been constructed at Fatima Jinnah University as part of broader sports development efforts.
Abbasi praised the Lahore Qalandars for their role in nurturing Pakistani cricket talent and said Rawalpindi’s existing cricket grounds would be used to further support youth development. He added that authorities are using cricket as a tool to promote a wider sports culture among young people in the city.
