Tejas Crash in Dubai Blows India’s Export Bid

The Indian Tejas fighter jet suffered a fatal crash. This happened at the Dubai Air Show. The incident is a major setback for New Delhi. India was promoting the Tejas as a reliable platform. It was intended as an export-ready aircraft.

India brought the jet to Dubai to impress buyers. This included many foreign delegations. However, the aircraft crashed during its aerial display. This left a damaging impression. Thousands of spectators witnessed the accident.

For many years, India showcased the Tejas. It was a symbol of indigenous defense production. Its development history was troubled. It faced delays and technical challenges. Still, the aircraft had recently been portrayed as a success. This followed large orders from the Indian Air Force. They placed orders for 180 upgraded variants.

The Dubai demonstration was critical. It was meant to build confidence among target countries. These included Egypt, Armenia, and Southeast Asian nations. Instead, the crash raises difficult questions. This comes at a critical time for India’s defense goals.

India positions the Tejas as an affordable option. It targets smaller air forces. The country offered technology transfer as a selling point. Flexible configurations were also highlighted. Its previously clean safety record was a major factor. The jet had only one previous engine-failure loss. The Dubai incident now complicates India’s sales pitch. It impacts a broader export campaign. India has aggressively pushed this campaign since 2014. The goal is to shift from an arms importer to an emerging global supplier.
