Web Desk: Pakistani artists, researchers and cultural professionals have gained access to a major international opportunity as applications open for the UNESCO World Heritage Scholarships 2026 in Sweden, offering a fully funded residency and fellowship programme.
The initiative aims to bring together creative and academic talent from around the world to strengthen the protection, research and promotion of global cultural heritage.
The postgraduate-level programme will take place at the Decorated Farmhouses of Hälsingland, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Sweden. Selected participants from Pakistan and other countries will live and work in Europe while pursuing research, creative production and cross-cultural dialogue in a heritage setting.
Organisers say the residency is designed to encourage collaboration between cultures and disciplines, allowing participants to engage directly with heritage preservation practices while developing original projects.
Successful candidates will receive full financial support, including a stipend of 50,000 Swedish kronor, or about $4,500. The funding will cover accommodation, daily living costs and project-related expenses during the residency.
UNESCO officials say the scholarship has been structured to reduce financial barriers for participants from developing countries, including Pakistan, ensuring wider access to international cultural platforms.
In a move expected to increase accessibility, the programme does not require IELTS or any other language proficiency test. This has made the scholarship particularly attractive to Pakistani applicants.
Professionals working in art, culture, heritage conservation, music, architecture, anthropology, history and social research are strongly encouraged to apply.
Applicants must submit creative or research proposals that connect Sweden’s Hälsingland World Heritage site with another UNESCO-listed site elsewhere in the world. The programme prioritises innovation, historical connections and cultural exchange.
UNESCO says the goal is to foster intellectual and creative links between civilizations while promoting shared global heritage values.
Candidates with strong portfolios, research backgrounds or demonstrated creative experience in heritage-related fields are expected to be competitive. Successful Pakistani applicants will gain hands-on experience at a UNESCO World Heritage site and represent Pakistan on an international cultural platform.
In addition, participants will have opportunities to network with international experts, artists, researchers and representatives of cultural institutions, potentially leading to future collaborations and joint projects.
The deadline to apply for the UNESCO World Heritage Scholarships 2026 is February 16, 2025. Applicants are advised to complete their project proposals and supporting documents well in advance, as the programme is highly competitive and expected to attract global interest.
