Islamabad: Pakistan’s National Cyber Crimes Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has registered a case against Shandana Gulzar, a senior leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and sitting National Assembly Member, over allegations of spreading misinformation and anti-state content on social media platforms.
According to NCCIA official, the case accuses Gulzar of sharing fabricated news related to the arrest of PTI activist Sanam Javed and other state-related matters, allegedly aimed at undermining public trust in national institutions.
The First Information Report (FIR) filed by the agency claims that Gulzar disseminated fake and misleading content, contributing to what authorities describe as a deliberate online disinformation campaign. The investigation is part of a broader crackdown on the spread of false information and hate-driven narratives across digital platforms.
Government has adopted a zero-tolerance policy toward individuals or groups using social media to destabilize national integrity or incite public unrest. “No one is above the law. Those who spread falsehoods that harm the country’s stability will be held accountable, regardless of their position or influence,” a government spokesperson said.
Authorities further noted that legal proceedings have commenced and investigations are ongoing. Gulzar is among several political figures accused of using digital platforms to mislead the public and promote divisive narratives.
The government has reiterated its commitment to addressing online misinformation and holding those responsible legally accountable, in line with national cybersecurity policies and laws.
