Web Desk: Terrorists attacked two police checkpoints in the northwestern city of Peshawar overnight, triggering exchanges of gunfire and explosions, security forces repelled both assaults and launched a search operation.
No immediate claim of responsibility was reported.
Police said gunmen launched a sudden assault with heavy weapons on the Sakhi Pul checkpoint in the Nasir Bagh area. Officers responded immediately, prompting an intense exchange of fire.
As security forces pushed back, the assailants fired rockets before fleeing under the cover of darkness, a police spokesperson said.
Meanwhile, in the limits of the Matni police station, militants attempted to target the Pasani checkpoint. However, officers monitoring suspicious movement went on alert and thwarted the advance before the attackers could breach the post, officials said.
Following the incidents, Capital City Police Officer Mian Saeed ordered heightened security across the city. He said police were responding decisively to any attack and that protecting lives and property remained the top priority.
Authorities launched a search operation in and around the affected areas and tightened monitoring at entry and exit points to prevent the suspects from escaping.
Police vowed to foil any attempt to disrupt peace in the provincial capital, underscoring their readiness to counter further threats.
