Senior journalist, analyst and anchorperson Hamid Mir has said that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif supports the creation of new provinces in Pakistan.
According to Hamid Mir, whenever the issue of creating new provinces is discussed, particularly during recent important meetings where the matter of whether or not to establish new provinces came under discussion, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has clearly maintained that new provinces should be created in Pakistan.
Hamid Mir said that some of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s senior ministers also fully agree with this position and believe that new provinces should be established in Pakistan.
He said the creation of new provinces is an important matter and that consultations at the government level have indicated Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s support for establishing new provinces.
It is worth mentioning that so far majority of the mainstream political parties, different schools of thought and an overwhelming majority of public have expressed their standing with the idea of the creation of new provinces in the good interest of the nation.
Supporters of smaller provinces argue that more compact administrative units could improve governance, service delivery and representation, particularly in geographically large provinces.
Earlier, Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari had said his party would stand with the public on the question of creating new provinces, signalling support for any move that won broad public consensus.
Speaking to reporters in Islamabad, Bhutto Zardari said the PPP had consistently stated its position on the issue in the context of each province and would support steps endorsed by the people.
“Pakistan Peoples Party will stand with the people, will stand with public opinion, and will support any step taken through consensus and public agreement,” Bhutto Zardari said.
The position also broadly echoes recent remarks by the military’s media wing, Inter-Services Public Relations, which has said that any decision on the formation of provinces should reflect the will of the people.
