PCB to announce new central contracts before UAE departure for Asia Cup: sources

Web desk: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi has instructed officials to finalise and announce the new list of central contracts. Before the national team leaves for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on August 21, sources confirmed on Monday.

The previous contracts expired on June 30, and talks on fresh agreements have been ongoing. Sources said the process is now in its final stages after consultations with coaches. The high-performance director, finance and the international cricket department.

This year, major reshuffling is expected, especially in Category D. Several players are set to be dropped, while others could be awarded contracts for the first time.

Those unlikely to make the cut include Aamir Jamal, Mohammad Huraira, Haseebullah, Usman Khan and Mohammad Ali. In contrast, Hasan Nawaz, Mohammad Haris, Sufyan Muqeem, Hasan Ali, Faheem Ashraf and Fakhar Zaman are expected to be included, as per media reports.

The names of Hussain Talat, Khushdil Shah, Mohammad Nawaz and Sahibzada Farhan are also under review.

The case of former captain Babar Azam has created uncertainty. With reports suggesting his place in the ‘A category’ is being reconsidered in light of form, fitness and long-term planning.

At the same time, the PCB is pursuing a policy of promoting young talent. Players like T20 skipper Salman Agha and spinner Abrar Ahmed are likely to be upgraded, while Sahibzada Farhan, Hasan Nawaz and Sufiyan Muqeem could secure contracts for the first time.

Not all players will benefit, however. Apart from those no longer active in any format, wicketkeeper Haseebullah and pacer Khurram Shahzad may also be excluded due to inconsistent performances.

The updated contracts will be issued once approved by the PCB chairman.

Pakistan’s schedule includes the tri-nation series in Sharjah from August 29 to September 7. Followed by the Asia Cup, which runs from August 9 to September 28. Pakistan will face Oman on September 12 and arch-rivals India on September 14.
