In historic win, Pakistan has clinched the first ever Commonwealth Beach Handball Championship 2025 title held in the Maldives.
The men in green made record with a flawless performance throughout the tournament, ending up winning the Championship with an undefeated seven wins and zero losses.
In the final, Pakistan sealed their dominance with a commanding 2–0 victory over Sri Lanka, winning 26–18 and 28–18. It was a fitting end to a campaign that showcased their tactical brilliance and seamless teamwork.
Their journey to the title kicked off with a stunning 2–0 win over India, where Pakistan thrashed their opponents with scores of 26–9 and 34–12. That opening win had set the tone for the rest of the tournament.
The team continued its winning streak by defeating Sri Lanka, Maldives, South Africa, and Bangladesh in the group stage. In the semi-final, they faced Bangladesh once again and cruised to another 2–0 win to book their place in the final.
Among the standout performers was Kashif Ali, whose all-round skills and scoring prowess proved vital, especially in the nail-biting 2–1 win against hosts Maldives. Muhammad Shahid Bashir and Ahmed Hassan Baig also played pivotal roles, offering consistent leadership and strategic depth throughout the championship.
The hosts, Maldives, finished second after defeating Bangladesh in the third-place match.
Earlier, Pakistan earned another international honour as young bodybuilder Shehroz Khan from Karachi’s Malir area won a gold medal at the Mr Universe Bodybuilding Championship in Pattaya, Thailand.
Shehroz competed in the 70+ kg category, defeating strong rivals from around the world to secure first place. His victory raised Pakistan’s flag on the global stage.
On his return, Shehroz received a hero’s welcome at Karachi Airport. Family members, fans, and MQM Pakistan leader Shariq Jamal greeted him with flowers and national flags.
Speaking to the media, Shehroz said: “I cannot thank Allah enough. Winning gold abroad is never easy. It takes a strict diet, tough training, and the prayers of my coach and family.”
MQM MPA Shariq Jamal called Shehroz’s achievement a matter of national pride. He said he would raise the issue in the Sindh Assembly to demand financial support and official recognition for the young champion. “It is the state’s responsibility to support such talented athletes,” he added.
Following Shehroz’s success, sports circles and bodybuilding professionals have urged the government to provide better facilities, sponsorships, and opportunities for Pakistani athletes to compete internationally. They said this would allow more young talent to shine on the world stage.
