Islamabad: Sugar prices have surged by up to 20 rupees per kilogram in just one week, according to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), as the cost of living continues to rise across the country.
Price Hikes Across Cities
In Karachi, sugar now sells for 220 rupees per kilogram, up from last week’s rates. Islamabad and Rawalpindi residents are paying 109 rupees per kilogram, while Lahore sees sugar priced at 179 rupees per kilogram. Gujranwala and Faisalabad report rates of 180 rupees per kilogram, and Sargodha, Multan, and Bahawalpur also share similar pricing.
Southern and Northern Cities Feel the Impact
In Hyderabad, sugar prices have jumped to 215 rupees per kilogram. Sukkur reports 195 rupees, Larkana 205 rupees, and Peshawar 190 rupees per kilogram. Bannu sees rates at 180 rupees per kilogram. Meanwhile, in Balochistan, Quetta’s sugar prices have reached 216 rupees, and Khuzdar reports 210 rupees per kilogram.
Rising Living Costs
The PBS data highlights the continued upward trend in essential commodities, adding pressure on households already struggling with inflation. Economists warn that without intervention, these price increases could exacerbate the cost-of-living crisis for millions of Pakistanis.
Policy Measures and Outlook
Authorities have yet to announce concrete measures to stabilize sugar prices, leaving consumers and businesses to cope with the escalating costs. The government faces growing calls to ensure adequate supply and control prices, particularly ahead of the festive season.
