RAIWIND: Nawaz Sharif, former Prime minister and President of PML-N have left Jati Umra and travelled to London.
He is on a trip to have a medical check up and is supposed to stay there about two weeks.
This visit is only a few weeks after Sharif had visited Pakistan to cast his vote on the 27th Constitutional Amendment in Parliament. The amendment, which is supported highly by those who are allied to the government, centers on military courts and reformation of the judiciary.
The party insiders argued that his comeback earlier this month gave him more strength and political influence in PML-N, leading to the impending election. According to them, the presence of Sharif was reassuring party members and strengthened his position in making major decisions.
The official sources of PML-N claim that the visit to London is purely medical in nature. Sources maintain that he is coming back after a checkup is done.
Nevertheless, scholars indicate that the timing of the visit is politicized. Political observers are following the trip closely with ongoing legal cases and the party actively creating its own narrative.
Sharif has been visiting London to have his medical treatment. He was there for some time in 2020 due to health reasons. After he stayed there for an extended period, he attracted a lot of public and political attention.
His most recent exit has sparked debate on his health, political authority and his political strategy for the party. Especially when the parliament is the most active and constitutional issues are high on the national agenda.
Observers note that the visit might be seen as a business-as-usual trip, but what stands out is that Sharif remains very important in the politics of Pakistan.
