Web Desk: Viral videos showing massive swarms of crows circling the skies over Tel Aviv triggered widespread speculation and concern across social media platforms Thursday.
The footage depicts thousands of birds congregating in dense black formations above the city for several hours. Consequently, the unusual sight prompted some online users to link the behavior to ongoing regional tensions and security developments. Some observers cited ancient traditions or Roman augury, suggesting the gathering represented a transition or an omen of significant events.
Despite the public anxiety, environmentalists and ornithologists quickly dismissed supernatural explanations for the event. Leading ornithologist Yaron Charka explained that the phenomenon represents a completely natural and seasonal occurrence. He noted that the spring season marks a peak period for bird migration, during which various species travel in large numbers and frequently gather over urban centers.
Furthermore, experts identified several scientific factors contributing to such collective behavior. These include the abundance of food in city environments, sudden shifts in weather patterns, and the birds’ instinctive need for communal safety against predators. Experts also emphasized that crows possess high intelligence and often utilize social strategies to increase their chances of survival during long migrations.
While local residents reported seeing similar sights in previous years, the rapid spread of the videos amplified the sense of alarm this week. Nevertheless, scientists maintained that social media often exaggerates common natural events. They urged the public to view the sightings as a routine part of the regional ecosystem rather than a sign of impending crisis.
