Heavy rain is set to begin today, with Karachi expecting strong monsoon showers from Monday to Wednesday. Authorities have warned of potential urban flooding and traffic disruptions across the city.

Karachi and Sindh on monsoon alert

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) forecasts intense rainfall across Sindh, with flooding risks in low-lying areas of Mirpurkhas, Shaheed Benazirabad, Tharparkar, Khairpur, Sukkur, Larkana, Thatta, Badin, Sujawal, and Hyderabad.

Stormwater drains may overflow, and power outages are possible. Fishermen and commuters should monitor local advisories.

Residents are urged to secure rooftops, clear small drains, and move valuables to higher shelves. Drivers should avoid underpasses and waterlogged routes during heavy downpours.

Islamabad and Punjab monsoon forecast

From Sunday to Tuesday, rain is expected in Islamabad and much of Punjab, including Murree, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Jhelum, Chakwal, Attock, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Chiniot, Sialkot, and Narowal.

Flash flooding may occur in hill streams and rivers after short, intense spells. The NDMA warns that flood-affected areas in Punjab could face further inundation.

Residents in katcha belts and river islands should relocate livestock and keep documents ready. Local teams will monitor embankments and announce diversions as needed.

Safety steps and health advice

Communities near rivers and nullahs should map safe evacuation routes and prepare emergency kits containing CNIC copies, drinking water, ORS, basic medicines, flashlights, power banks, and dry food.

Avoid crossing submerged roads, bridges, or areas near electric poles. Keep phones charged and follow control room updates.

To prevent waterborne diseases, use clean or boiled water, wash hands frequently, and keep food covered. Parents should keep children indoors during heavy rain.

Adhering to instructions from district authorities, Rescue 1122, and traffic police is crucial. Early precautions this week can minimize losses and ensure family safety.
