Web Desk: Heavy rain swept across Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad, the neighboring city of Rawalpindi and several other parts of the country, bringing relief after two days of intense heat and humidity, while the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) issued a flood alert over rising water levels in the Chenab River.
Cool winds accompanied the rainfall in Punjab, leading to a noticeable drop in temperatures and providing respite to residents. However, rainwater accumulated on several major roads and in low-lying areas, disrupting traffic in parts of the twin cities.
Light to heavy showers were also reported in several cities across Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and other upper regions of the country. In some areas, thunderstorms and strong winds accompanied the rain, improving weather conditions after days of oppressive heat.
Meanwhile, the NDMA warned that continued rainfall in upper catchment areas could significantly increase water flow in the Chenab River, raising the possibility of moderate to high-level flooding.
The authority directed provincial and district administrations to implement precautionary measures and remain prepared for any emergency.
Residents living along the Chenab River, particularly those in low-lying settlements and riverine areas, were advised to closely monitor the situation and be ready to move to safer locations if necessary.
In addition, rescue services, district administrations and irrigation departments have been placed on high alert to ensure a swift response to any flood-related emergency.
The NDMA urged the public to avoid unnecessary visits to rivers, streams and seasonal waterways. It also advised parents to keep children away from fast-flowing water and encouraged citizens to follow the latest weather updates.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, intermittent rainfall is expected to continue across various parts of the country over the next 24 hours.
The department said isolated heavy downpours are likely in upper regions, increasing the risk of flash flooding in local streams and urban flooding in low-lying areas.
