Web desk: A female student of Fatima Jinnah Medical University died after falling from the fourth floor of the university hostel on Tuesday night. The incident shocked fellow students who found her critically injured and immediately informed the college administration.
The student was a resident of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and lived in the government hostel of the university. Authorities shifted her to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital for emergency treatment. Doctors initially assessed her condition and then moved her to the operating theatre for urgent neurosurgery.
According to Vice Chancellor Prof Khalid Masood Gondal, senior surgeons performed major brain surgery. However, her condition remained critical and she later passed away.
The university administration has launched two separate inquiries. The vice chancellor formed a medical board of senior doctors to review the treatment process. In addition, he constituted a five member fact finding committee to investigate the circumstances of the incident. Prof Bilquis Shabbir, Dean of Undergraduate Studies, will lead the committee. Officials have asked the panel to submit its report within 24 hours.
The vice chancellor stated that she may have fallen accidentally. However, some eyewitnesses and sources within the institution claimed that she may have jumped. Authorities have not confirmed the cause of the fall and have not identified any motive.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about student wellbeing and safety on campuses. Earlier, two other students, including a female student at a private university in Raiwind, also died after falling from buildings.
University officials have urged students to seek support during emotional distress. Further investigation is underway.
