Web Desk: The government and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) have made progress in their negotiations, with sources claiming that the opposition has agreed to several key demands concerning security, governance and political activity in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The reported understanding emerged as government, Pakistan Peoples Party and opposition representatives held a second round of talks in Islamabad on Saturday. National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq chaired the meeting.

According to sources familiar with the discussions, the PTI has agreed to cooperate on arrangements concerning the merged tribal districts and to support ongoing military operations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The sources also claimed that the opposition had agreed not to undertake further long marches or violent demonstrations and would focus on improving governance in the province.

Another reported element of the understanding involves cooperation with the federal government in efforts to counter terrorism and address security challenges in KP.

The reported developments come amid heightened tensions between Islamabad and the PTI-led provincial government. The federal government has previously raised concerns about security in the province and linked its demands to the party’s planned Oct. 4 march on Islamabad.

The issue of access to PTI founder Imran Khan remains separate, with sources saying meetings with the incarcerated former prime minister and other matters would be dealt with according to the law.

However, the reported concessions have not been independently confirmed in an official joint statement. Earlier reporting showed that the two sides had exchanged their positions but had not publicly disclosed a final agreement.

The negotiations began as PTI maintained its plan for an Oct. 4 march, while the government pressed the party to withdraw the protest. On Saturday, PTI leaders and the government continued discussions in an effort to resolve the standoff through dialogue.

The talks also come against the backdrop of warnings from federal officials that emergency measures or governor’s rule could be considered in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa if the political and security situation deteriorates. PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari said Saturday that the federal government had considered such options but that his party had advocated a political solution.

The latest reported understanding, if formally confirmed by both sides, would mark a significant shift in the political confrontation between the federal government and PTI.

For now, however, the details remain subject to formal confirmation, and the final position of both negotiating teams is expected to become clearer once the talks conclude and a joint statement or written agreement is issued.
