Web Desk: Samsung Electronics officially announced it will discontinue its long-standing proprietary messaging application, Samsung Messages, in July 2026. The tech giant is moving to consolidate its ecosystem by transitioning all Galaxy smartphone users to Google Messages as the primary texting platform.

This strategic shift follows years of gradual integration, as Samsung has already been pre-installing Google Messages as the default option on its latest flagship devices, including the Galaxy S25 and the recently released Galaxy S26 series. According to a notice published on the company’s official website, the move aims to provide a more consistent and feature-rich messaging experience across the Android platform. Samsung specifically cited the advanced Rich Communication Services (RCS) capabilities, AI-powered spam detection, and Gemini-based smart features available in Google’s app as key reasons for the transition.

The company has urged its global user base to set Google Messages as their default texting app immediately to avoid service interruptions. Furthermore, Samsung clarified that while most modern devices will see the app deactivated by the July 2026 deadline, an exception exists for older hardware. Specifically, smartphones running Android 11 or earlier versions will not be affected by this shutdown and may continue using the legacy Samsung Messages app.

For users on Android 12 and newer, the company recommends checking the Samsung Messages app settings for a specific deactivation date tailored to their region and device model. Once the service officially ends, the app will no longer support standard SMS or RCS functions, though it will remain functional for reaching emergency services and designated emergency contacts.

Industry analysts view this as a significant step in the “sunsetting” of redundant manufacturer-specific apps. By adopting a unified messaging standard, Samsung aligns itself more closely with Google’s vision for Android, simplifying software updates and improving cross-device communication. Users who have not yet switched can download Google Messages from the Play Store and follow the in-app prompts to migrate their existing conversation history and contacts.
