Instagram Appears to Limit Posts to Three Hashtags

Instagram

Instagram is changing how users can tag their content. It appears they are testing a major change. Many users are reporting that they are noticing that Instagram is limiting them to only three hashtags per post. The app is blocking them to add any more.

This new limit has not been publicly announced by Instagram. Interestingly the limitation does not appear on all accounts. This suggests it may be a limited test or a gradual rollout that is not complete yet.

Some users receive warnings when they try to use more hashtags while others are still using as many hashtags as they like. Currently it is unclear whether Instagram wants to enforce this rule across the platforms to just some users.

If this change is implemented permanently, then the long standing practice of adding a dozen hashtags to improve visibility will end. This will also be a complete departure from early days of Instagram when hashtags were the primary tools for discovery for creators before Instagram shifted toward algorithms-driven recommendations, influencer-focused content and ads.

No official confirmation or reasoning behind the change has been provided by Instagram yet. It could be that the app is trying to reduce hashtag spam, but until Instagram officially confirms it the intent remains unclear.

It is important to note that it is typical with Instagram to test features with small group of users before making broader decisions. So, according to that whether this three hashtag limit will become permanent will depend upon how good it performs.
