Flood expected in Hyderabad in next 4 days

Heavy rain with thunderstorms is expected in Hyderabad within the next 1–2 hours, posing a risk of urban flooding, as per a statement issued by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on X. Karachi is also likely to experience heavy rain in the next 60–90 minutes.

Torrential downpours may cause urban flooding and power outages. This system may affect the region again between August 24 and 28.

NDMA warns of heavy rain in Hyderabad, Karachi in coming hours

In Hyderabad, heavy rain with thunder and lightning is expected within the next 1–2 hours, posing a risk of urban flooding. Karachi is also likely to receive heavy rain in the next 60–90 minutes. The downpour may lead to urban flooding and power outages.

Precautionary measures to take in heavy rain
  • Residents are advised to avoid travelling on waterlogged roads and to stay away from electric poles.
  • Electrical appliances should be secured and used with safety precautions.
  • People are urged to check drainage systems in their homes and nearby areas to prevent water accumulation.
  • Those living in low-lying areas should keep an emergency kit ready, including water, food, flashlights, and a first-aid kit.
  • Authorities have stressed the importance of following instructions issued by the local administration.

Heavy rain, thunderstorm expected

The Meteorological Department has warned that torrential rains could trigger urban flooding in low-lying areas of Sindh, including Karachi, Thatta, Badin, Sajawal, Tharparker, Umer Kot, Mirpurkhas, Hyderabad, Shaheed Benazirabad, Tando Allayar, Tando Muhammad Khan, Sanghar and Jamshoro. Flash floods may also occur in local streams and nullahs.

Officials cautioned that “heavyfalls, windstorms, and lightning” could damage vulnerable structures such as kacha houses, electric poles, billboards, vehicles and solar panels. Citizens, travellers and tourists have been advised to stay away from risky areas, avoid unnecessary exposure, and remain updated on the latest weather alerts to prevent any untoward situation.

For today, the forecast suggested mainly hot and humid weather across most parts of the country. However, Karachi continues to deal with the aftermath of heavy rains that caused widespread destruction, economic setbacks, and loss of lives.

Tomorrow weather forecast

Tomorrow, on Friday, hot and humid weather is again predicted for most regions. Still, widespread rain-wind/thundershower with isolated heavyfalls is likely in lower Sindh. During the night, partly cloudy skies with rain-wind/thunderstorm may develop at isolated places in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, north-east Punjab and the Potohar region.

According to the synoptic situation, a seasonal low continues to prevail over north Balochistan. Strong moist currents from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal are moving into the southern parts of the country, while a shallow westerly wave is expected to approach upper regions from tomorrow night.

PMD forecast for August 23 to 27

The Meteorological Department has forecast a new spell of rain starting from August 23 across the country. The fresh spell has raised concerns of urban flooding and landslides in vulnerable areas.

From August 23 to 27, rains with thundershowers are expected in Islamabad, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan. Sindh and Balochistan are likely to receive showers between August 23 and 26, while heavy rainfall is forecast in Sindh and eastern and southern Balochistan from August 27 to 29.

Urban flooding in Karachi

Authorities have warned of possible flooding in urban centres and landslides in hilly regions, particularly in northern areas and central Punjab. Recent devastating tornadoes and downpouring rains still have Karachi in shock.

Traders reported losses of nearly Rs15 billion due to business closures. At least 17 people also lost their lives in rain-related incidents.

Though major highways have now been cleared, several residential areas and markets remain inundated. Many neighbourhoods are also suffering from power cuts despite K-Electric’s claims that supply has returned to normal. Residents have criticised the authorities for failing to improve drainage and electricity systems that collapse each monsoon.

Situation in KP

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) issued a report detailing the heavy losses caused by recent rains and floods. According to the report, 393 people have died and 190 others have been injured in rain-related incidents so far. The deceased include 300 men, 53 women and 40 children.

Floods have also damaged 1,618 houses in the province, with 1,185 partially damaged and 433 destroyed. Buner reported the highest number of casualties with 234 deaths, followed by Swabi with 42 deaths.

The PDMA has directed local administrations in the affected districts to speed up relief operations and provide immediate assistance to those impacted.
