Heavy fines, jail for littering announced in Punjab

The preparations for a province-wide crackdown on littering have been finalized, with strict punishments set to take effect from January 1.

A zero-tolerance policy has been announced by the Officials for dumping or burning garbage in public spaces. Violators will face heavy fines and even prison sentences under the new enforcement regime.

A fine of up to Rs. 500,000 will be charged for burning garbage, and imprisonment up to three years. The penalty for burning tires is even more strict. A tire burner will face 7 years in prison with a Rs. 500,000 fine.

The overall punishment framework will allow fines ranging from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 500,000. The imprisonment sentences will range from three to seven years. This will depend upon the nature of the violation.

The fines for littering will be based on the type of littering. A Rs. 25,000 fine for throwing garbage outside shops, homes, or factories. If waste is dumped in the neighbourhood or street drains, it will result in a Rs. 10,000 fine. If animal waste or remains are thrown, a penalty of Rs. 50,000 will be charged.

The Punjab Authority for Suthra Punjab has formed dedicated monitoring teams. The teams will oversee commercial zones, residential areas, streets, and industrial areas to ensure compliance with the new rules.

The authorities have described the initiative as a major cleanliness drive. It has been stressed by the authorities that strict action will be taken against anyone not follow the rules in public spaces.

The citizens have also been urged by authorities to cooperate and follow proper waste disposal practices. This will help avoid penalties and improve environmental conditions across Punjab.
