Lahore: A recently imported giraffe at the Lahore Safari Zoo has died following complications linked to climate stress and stomach issues, according to officials familiar with the matter.
Import From South Africa
A few months ago, Punjab authorities imported 12 giraffes from South Africa for the Lahore Safari Zoo and the Lahore Zoo. Nine were designated for the Safari Zoo, while three were meant for the city zoo. The provincial government allocated Rs135 million for the project.
Quarantine Completed
All 12 giraffes were placed under quarantine upon arrival, and officials say the quarantine period has now been completed. Despite receiving identical food, care, and environmental conditions, insiders report that two of the giraffes appeared weak and underdeveloped from the first day.
Signs of Illness
According to Safari Park sources, both vulnerable giraffes showed signs of stomach-related problems. One of them died a few days ago, with climate change–related stress also cited as a contributing factor.
Official Response Pending
Efforts to obtain an official statement from the Punjab Wildlife Department are underway. Authorities have yet to confirm the cause of death or outline measures to protect the remaining animals.
