Web Desk: The Punjab government has announced a local holiday in Lahore on February 6 to mark the Basant festival, following recommendations from the city’s district administration. Officials said the move is aimed at allowing residents to take part in celebrations while ensuring safety and proper organization.

With the Basant holiday on Wednesday, February 6, combined with Kashmir Day on Thursday, February 5, and the regular weekend on Saturday and Sunday, residents will enjoy a four-day break. Authorities explained that Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday were already scheduled holidays, and the government added Friday to facilitate public participation in the festivities.

The government emphasised that the additional holiday would help reduce traffic congestion and provide a safer environment for the public during the festival. Lahore’s deputy commissioner advised children under 18 to celebrate Basant with family members to maintain order and avoid accidents.

Authorities assured that all relevant departments would coordinate to guarantee a secure and smooth festival, allowing citizens to enjoy the traditional cultural celebrations without concern.

To maintain law and order, Lahore Police have divided the city into red, yellow, and green zones based on risk assessment. Red zones, covering densely populated and sensitive areas, will face the strictest restrictions, while yellow and green zones will see proportionally lighter controls.

Police also plan to deploy advanced technology, including drones, social media monitoring, and dedicated control rooms, to oversee the city during Basant. Officials warned that individuals involved in rooftop drinking, celebratory gunfire, or other illegal activities would face immediate action.
