Senate vacant seat of Murad Saeed

The Election Commission of Pakistan has disqualified Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and former federal minister Murad Saeed.

In a major development, the Election Commission declared Murad Saeed ineligible after he had been elected to a general seat in the Senate from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The Commission has also withdrawn his victory notification, resulting in the seat becoming vacant. This decision was formally announced in an official statement issued on March 25, 2026.

According to details, the action was taken in light of a March 7, 2026 verdict by Anti-Terrorism Court No. 1 in Rawalpindi. In the case titled State vs. Asim Rehman and others, Murad Saeed was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Based on this court ruling, the Election Commission disqualified him under the relevant clause of Article 63 of the Constitution of Pakistan.

The ECP statement clarified that Murad Saeed had earlier been notified as a returned candidate on July 24, 2025, for a general Senate seat from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. However, following his conviction, he no longer remains eligible to hold the position. Consequently, he has been de-notified with immediate effect, and the seat has been declared vacant.

The statement further said that the decision was taken after due deliberation in an official meeting of the Election Commission. Copies of the decision have been sent to the President, the Prime Minister, the Senate Secretariat, the Provincial Election Commissioner Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and other relevant authorities to initiate further action in accordance with constitutional requirements.
