The Chief Minister of Punjab has launched a mission to permanently protect the people of the province from the devastation caused by floods.
A special meeting regarding post-flood arrangements was held under the chairpersonship of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, where relevant departments gave a detailed briefing.
During the meeting, it was decided that to eliminate the root cause of flood destruction, all encroachments in flood zones will be removed within three months and the areas will be cleared. It was also decided that those who construct illegal structures in water channels will not be provided any government aid.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif directed authorities to ensure strict implementation of the ban on construction in river pathways and ordered continuous monitoring to prevent such activities. She said that construction in riverbeds will be permanently banned.
During the meeting, it was also agreed to build 17 mini dams at different locations in Punjab. The feasibility report for building a dam in Chiniot has been completed and approved in principle. The Chief Minister also directed the introduction of Inflatable Dam Technology.
The meeting also decided to increase water storage capacity at Kalabagh and Sudhnai sites, while restructuring the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) and creating eight new wings.
The Chief Minister also approved the establishment of District Emergency Operation Centers, Regional Disaster Centers, and warehouses.
Additionally, Rescue 1122 has been approved to receive the latest equipment for flood operations. The briefing revealed that 186 roads spanning 563 kilometers, 446 culverts, and one bridge damaged by floods in Punjab have been restored. It was also informed that 28% higher rainfall is expected this year.
