Web Desk: Artificial intelligence bots are proliferating so rapidly that they will likely surpass humans in total internet traffic by 2027, according to the head of internet infrastructure giant Cloudflare.

Matthew Prince, CEO of Cloudflare, revealed during a recent industry conference that the explosion of AI tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini has triggered a seismic shift in web traffic over the last six months.

Prince noted that the fundamental nature of who is browsing the internet and what they are doing is evolving at an unprecedented pace. Consequently, the digital landscape is moving toward a future where automated systems become the primary “residents” of the web.

For years, bot traffic remained relatively stable, accounting for approximately 20% of all internet activity. While Google operated the largest legitimate bots, the remainder of that traffic often consisted of hackers, spammers, and other cybercriminals.

However, the rise of generative AI has fundamentally altered this balance. These sophisticated models require massive amounts of data to function, leading to an insatiable demand for web scraping and data harvesting.

As a result, Prince predicts that the sheer volume of bot-driven requests will eclipse human activity within the next three years. This marks a significant departure from the traditional internet model, which was designed primarily for human interaction and manual browsing.

This transition enters a new era where the internet serves as a training ground for machines rather than just a communications tool for people. While some of these bots improve user experiences by powering advanced AI assistants, the surge also presents challenges for web security and infrastructure management.

Industry experts suggest that as bots become the dominant force online, companies must adapt their defenses to distinguish between helpful AI crawlers and malicious automated threats.

The rapid change highlights a growing reality: the digital world is becoming increasingly automated, leaving human users as the minority in a space they once exclusively controlled.
