Web Desk: OpenAI has quietly introduced a new file storage feature for ChatGPT that allows users to save uploaded documents in a dedicated library, significantly expanding the chatbot’s long-term usability as a personal AI workspace.
The feature, now rolling out across both mobile and web versions of ChatGPT, enables users to retain uploaded files instead of losing them when a conversation ends. Previously, documents shared during chats were not stored for future reference once the session closed.
Under the new system, uploaded content such as spreadsheets, presentations, resumes, recipes and tax documents can remain accessible inside a built-in storage library for use in later conversations.
The update effectively transforms ChatGPT into a more persistent productivity platform by allowing the AI assistant to reference previously uploaded files in future interactions.
Users will be able to manage stored documents through a new “Library” section appearing alongside image tools, while a dedicated “Storage” option will also be available in settings.
The enhancement moves the platform closer to functioning like a cloud-based AI workspace, similar in concept to file management systems used in productivity applications.
OpenAI has introduced different storage capacities depending on subscription tiers.
Free-tier users will receive up to 500 megabytes of storage, while Go subscribers will have access to 4 gigabytes. Meanwhile, Plus and Business subscribers will receive 20 gigabytes, and Pro users will have up to 100 gigabytes of storage capacity.
The company has not yet announced whether additional storage options or enterprise-level expansions will follow.
The new capability is being introduced on both the ChatGPT mobile application and the web interface, broadening access for users across devices.
Industry analysts say the feature could strengthen ChatGPT’s position in the rapidly growing AI productivity market by making interactions more continuous and context-aware rather than limited to single chat sessions.
The rollout also reflects increasing competition among AI companies to integrate long-term memory, file management and workplace functionality into consumer-facing AI tools.
