Teen users will now be able to turn off ChatGPT’s ability to respond with a human-like voice.
The company behind ChatGPT, OpenAI, has introduced additional safety measures for users under the age of 18.
According to OpenAI, the new “ChatGPT for Teens” experience is designed to protect young users from becoming overly attached to the human-like qualities of AI and from unhealthy patterns of use.
Teen users will now be able to disable ChatGPT’s human-like voice responses. They will also receive reminders to take breaks, helping them avoid using the chatbot for extended periods.
According to the company, users who indicate that they are between 13 and 17 years old when creating an account will automatically be placed in a teen account. Users whom OpenAI’s systems identify as being under 18 will also receive the same protected experience. ChatGPT is not available to children under 13.
OpenAI says the new measures were not introduced in response to any single incident. However, the company is increasing safety measures in response to concerns surrounding AI systems that could lead some users to perceive chatbots as having human-like consciousness.
The Study Mode feature in ChatGPT has also been enhanced for teenage education. Instead of simply providing direct answers, it helps students understand problems through questions and step-by-step guidance.
Teen users or their parents will be able to set “Study Hours” during which Study Mode can be made the default. A “Quiet Hours” feature will also allow them to limit ChatGPT use during other specified times.
