A fresh controversy has erupted ahead of the crucial FIFA World Cup clash between the United States and Belgium after FIFA suspended the red-card ban imposed on American striker Folarin Balogun.
The decision made Balogun eligible to play against Belgium. According to media reports, FIFA took the step following a personal request from US President Donald Trump, prompting strong reactions across Belgium.
Belgian citizens condemned the move as unfair and contrary to the principles of the game, arguing that if political influence can overturn disciplinary decisions, the integrity of football rules would be undermined.
Belgium’s Deputy Prime Minister, Maxime Prévot, also expressed surprise, saying that if the decision was indeed made because of a phone call, it would violate the fundamental principles of sport.
Meanwhile, US Ambassador to Belgium Bill White denied that President Trump had influenced FIFA’s decision. He said Trump merely thanked FIFA after the ruling had already been made.
Despite the controversy, Belgian fans urged their national team, the Red Devils, to stay focused and deliver their best performance on the pitch regardless of the surrounding debate.
The issue has intensified scrutiny over FIFA’s decision-making process, with many observers calling for greater fairness to protect the sport from any perception of political influence. The incident has also added extra tension and anticipation prior to high-stakes World Cup encounter between the United States and Belgium.
