Islamabad: Information Minister Attaullah Tarrar categorically denies any PMLN Social Media Troll Brigade. A televised exchange between journalist Asma Shirazi and PML-N leader Attaullah Tarar on Tuesday reignited debate over online harassment, political trolling and the use of AI-generated content in Pakistan’s polarized media landscape.
Journalist Accuses PML-N of Running Troll Network
During the discussion, Shirazi accused the ruling PML-N’s alleged online supporters of circulating an AI-generated video targeting journalist Benazir Shah. She said images linked to those behind the video had already surfaced, underscoring her claim that the party maintained a coordinated trolling operation.
Tarar Rejects Allegations, Cites Apology to Journalist
Tarar firmly denied that the PML-N operated any troll brigade. He said that if such a network existed, he would not have apologized to Shah “immediately and publicly” after the video emerged.
According to Tarar, the account that posted the manipulated clip issued an open apology to Shah earlier in the day. He added that he had encouraged her to pursue “the strongest possible action,” which she declined.
Clash Intensifies Over Other Harassment Incidents
The exchange grew heated when Shirazi pressed Tarar on the harassment targeting television anchor Shahzeb Khanzada. Instead of responding directly, Tarar questioned why no one from the PTI had apologized to Shirazi, noting that she herself had faced a two-day smear campaign on social media, including comments about her wearing a hijab. He alleged that PTI officials and a former minister were involved.
Tarar Promises Action in Khanzada Case
When Shirazi repeatedly asked about the Khanzada incident, Tarar said the individual accused of harassing the anchor was a PTI member originally from Gujranwala who now works as a real estate agent in Canada. Tarar said authorities would take action “according to the law” and stressed that the government intended to “set an example.”
He added that residents in Gujranwala had been angered by the incident and had attempted to march toward the man’s home, but officials intervened to prevent escalation.

The confrontation highlighted the growing use of manipulated media and targeted campaigns in Pakistan’s political battles, with both journalists and political parties accusing one another of fostering toxic online environments.
