Aryna Sabalenka has advanced to the US Open semi-finals without striking a ball. Her scheduled opponent, Marketa Vondrousova, pulled out of the quarterfinal with a knee injury.
The defending champion was due to face the unseeded Czech player in New York’s night session. However, Vondrousova informed officials less than two hours before the match that she could not compete. The withdrawal means Sabalenka will now face Jessica Pegula in the last four, a repeat of last year’s final.
Vondrousova’s injury setback
Vondrousova, a former Wimbledon champion, has struggled with fitness issues throughout her career. She attempted to practice before the match but ended her session early. Witnesses said she appeared to be in discomfort and later walked through the players’ area with her left leg heavily strapped.
In a statement, she explained her decision. “I tried my best to take to the court today, but after consultation with the tournament doctor, I decided not to risk aggravating the injury,” she said. “I appreciate all the support and apologize to the fans who were looking forward to the match.”
Aryna Sabalenka expressed sympathy on social media, writing, “So sorry for Marketa after all she’s been through. She has been playing amazing tennis, and I know how badly this must hurt for her.”
Pegula through with commanding win
Meanwhile, American fourth seed Jessica Pegula secured her spot in the semi-finals with a straight-sets victory over Barbora Krejcikova. Pegula won 6-3 in just over an hour, showing strong form as she chases her first Grand Slam title.
Krejcikova, a two-time major winner, had come into the match after a dramatic comeback in the previous round. She had saved eight match points against Taylor Townsend. But against Pegula, she struggled to find rhythm and produced seven double faults.
Pegula took control early, racing to a 3-0 lead in the first set. She continued to dominate from the baseline and capitalized on Krejcikova’s weak second serve. Even when Krejcikova threatened a comeback, Pegula stayed composed to close out the match.
After the win, Pegula said, “I feel really comfortable. It’s crazy to feel this comfortable on the biggest court in the world with the craziest crowd and the best players. Ten years ago I never thought I’d be good at this but I guess I am.”
Semi-final rematch set
The stage is now set for Aryna Sabalenka and Jessica Pegula to meet once again at Flushing Meadows. Last year, the two contested the US Open final, with Sabalenka coming out on top. Pegula will be aiming to turn the tables this time, while Sabalenka is targeting back-to-back titles.
Sabalenka, ranked world number one, has been in strong form this season. Her progress to the semi-finals without playing may give her extra rest ahead of the crucial clash. Pegula, however, has been sharp throughout the tournament, not dropping a set so far.
