Ever wonder why Pakistan fires 21-gun salute on August-14

21-gun salute

Pakistan marks Independence Day with a 21-gun salute, a ceremonial honour that signals respect, dignity and national pride.

The practice is seen at major state events and for visiting dignitaries.

Its roots go back centuries and explain why the number 21 became the global standard.

21-gun salute: from seven guns to a universal sign of respect

According to one account attributed to the US Army Center of Military History, the custom began in the 14th century when a battery of seven guns fired three times.

Naval practice later turned this into a clear message of peace: ships entering a friendly port fired their guns empty to show they meant no harm, while shore batteries answered in kind.

Writers note that the choice of seven had symbolic weight, with some linking it to astrological and Biblical significance.

Over time, multiplying seven by three produced 21, which became the highest ceremonial honour.

The core idea stayed the same. You fire as a gesture of trust and respect, not as a threat.

As the ritual spread, countries kept the essence but adjusted the tools. Some used field guns. Some used naval guns.

Directions and distances varied by location and safety rules. What did not change was the message.

A 21-gun salute is a nation’s public promise of respect to a leader, a guest, or a national day.

Pakistan adopted the practice during the British era and kept it after independence.

Today it is ours as much as it is any other country’s. Bangladesh, Canada, Denmark and the Republic of China observe similar honours.

In Pakistan, the salute is reserved for specific occasions. Independence Day is one of them.

The ceremony at dawn sets the tone. It reminds people of the state’s continuity and the discipline behind public service.

It also connects Pakistan to a wider world where old maritime customs became marks of modern protocol.

That is the simple story behind the sound that carries across the capital every August 14.
