Chronic kidney disease is the 9th leading cause of death worldwide
Chronic kidney disease is the ninth leading cause of death worldwide. According to an estimate, one in every 10 people globally suffers from chronic kidney disease, which can cause fluids and other waste products to accumulate in the body. However, prevention may be easier than expected, and consuming two B vitamins may help protect against kidney-related problems.
A study published in the journal Frontiers found that two B vitamins may help protect against cardiometabolic-kidney (CKM) syndrome.
The researchers analyzed the health and dietary data of more than 14,000 people affected by CKM syndrome. The study examined the effects of six B vitamins—B1, B2, B3, B6, B12 and folate—on kidney, heart and metabolic health.
The researchers assessed the impact of these vitamins on severe stages of CKM syndrome. Dietary information was used to determine how much of each B vitamin participants consumed. The data was then compared with a separate group of 323 people.
The researchers found that people who consumed higher amounts of vitamins B2 and B6 had a lower risk of severe CKM syndrome.
Those with higher vitamin B2 intake had a 27% lower risk of severe CKM syndrome, while higher vitamin B6 intake was associated with a 26% lower risk. The other B vitamins did not show a significant reduction in the risk of CKM syndrome.
Vitamins B2 and B6 perform several important functions in the body, including helping convert food into usable energy.
Both vitamins also help protect against oxidative stress and inflammation, two factors that can increase the risk of heart, kidney and metabolic problems.
The study could not establish a cause-and-effect relationship. However, researchers said that low intake of vitamins B2 and B6 may negatively affect kidney, heart and metabolic health.
According to experts, both vitamins can be obtained through a variety of foods. Vitamin B2 is found in milk and dairy products, eggs, meat and leafy green vegetables. Vitamin B6 can be obtained from chicken, fish, meat, potatoes, chickpeas and other foods.
