Residents struggle in Kandahar as groundwater falls 40 metres

Mandisar village in Kandahar

Web Desk: Residents of Mandisar village in Kandahar province’s Daman district are facing an acute shortage of clean drinking water after a sharp decline in underground water levels disrupted daily life and agricultural activities, according to Tolo News.

Residents said groundwater levels have fallen by between 20 and 40 metres, making access to water increasingly difficult for households and farmers.

The decline has placed additional pressure on a community that depends heavily on groundwater for basic needs and agriculture. As water sources become harder to reach, residents say their ability to maintain farming activities has also been affected.

Local elders, including Juma Gul and Mohammad Sadiq, have urged authorities to respond quickly to the crisis.

They identified reliable access to clean drinking water as the community’s most pressing need. In addition, they called for repairs to roads in the area, saying heavily damaged routes have further complicated daily life and access to essential services.

The residents appealed to authorities and relevant agencies to provide immediate assistance and address both the water shortage and deteriorating infrastructure.

The situation in Mandisar highlights the challenges facing rural communities when declining water resources combine with damaged infrastructure.

For residents, securing safe drinking water remains the immediate priority. However, repairing roads and restoring reliable access to basic services are also crucial to helping the village cope with the worsening conditions.

Without timely intervention, residents fear the water shortage could continue to place pressure on households and agricultural livelihoods.
