Web Desk: Former Pakistan Test cricketer Basit Ali has been hospitalised in Karachi after suffering a heart attack, according to media reports.

The 55-year-old former batter reportedly developed chest pain and discomfort before being taken to a private hospital for treatment. Doctors carried out an angioplasty after medical examinations indicated that he had suffered a heart attack.

According to sources, the procedure was completed successfully and Basit’s condition is currently described as stable. Doctors are expected to keep him under observation for about two days to monitor his recovery and assess whether further treatment is required.

If his condition continues to improve, he could be discharged after the observation period.

Basit represented Pakistan during the 1990s after making his international debut against the West Indies in 1993.

The right-handed middle-order batter played 19 Tests and 50 One-Day Internationals for Pakistan before his international career ended in 1996.

In Test cricket, he scored 858 runs at an average of 26.81, including one century. He made a stronger impact in the limited-overs format, accumulating 1,265 runs in 43 ODI innings at an average of 34.18 and a strike rate of 75.79.

His ODI record included one century and nine half-centuries.

One of Basit’s notable performances came during Pakistan’s 1993 campaign, when he struck an unbeaten 127 against the West Indies in Sharjah.

His aggressive approach and attacking stroke play made him a recognisable figure in Pakistan’s batting lineup during the period.

Basit’s final Test appearance came against New Zealand in Christchurch, where he scored five runs across the match, including a duck.

After retiring from international cricket, Basit remained closely associated with the sport through coaching and cricket analysis.

He has regularly featured in discussions about Pakistan’s national team and continued to offer his views on cricketing affairs in recent years.

News of his hospitalisation has prompted messages of support from cricket fans and former players, with many expressing hopes for his swift recovery.
