Distribution companies have submitted a proposal to impose an additional burden of more than Rs23 billion on consumers.
The major relief currently being provided to electricity consumers across Pakistan, including Karachi, is nearing its end, after which electricity prices are likely to increase from next month.
According to sources, the quarterly adjustment relief, which provides a reduction of Rs1.99 per unit in electricity tariffs, will expire this month in August. The relief has been in effect since June 2026, providing consumers with a total benefit of more than Rs67.17 billion.
According to reports, after the relief ends, the quarterly adjustment for April to June 2026 is likely to be implemented from next month, raising concerns over an increase in electricity tariffs.
Electricity distribution companies have submitted an application to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) in this regard, proposing to impose an additional burden of more than Rs23 billion on consumers. The proposed increase amounts to approximately Rs1 per unit, although the final decision will be made by NEPRA.
NEPRA will decide whether the proposed increase is approved and, if so, how much additional cost consumers have to shoulder.
Earlier this month, Nepra approved a Rs0.75 per unit increase in electricity tariffs.
