A former Indian diplomat has described the “Makkah Trilateral Agreement” as a threat to India.
T.S. Tirumurti, India’s former permanent representative to the United Nations and former foreign secretary, reacted to the trilateral defence agreement between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye, saying that the alliance could increase the influence of the three countries in the region, which would not be a positive development for India.
In a post on the social media platform X, T.S. Tirumurti wrote that immediately after the Iran war began, he had predicted in an article published on March 10 that Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan would benefit from the new situation emerging in the region and that their importance would increase.
He wrote in his post: “Immediately after the Iran war started, I wrote in The Hindu on March 10 that Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan would benefit. Their regional importance and influence will increase. This is not good news for India.”
The former Indian diplomat’s statement comes at a time when the trilateral defence cooperation between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye is drawing political and diplomatic commentary in various countries.
