Web Desk: “Mera Lyari,” a feature film produced under the Sindh government’s film initiative, has entered the race for an Academy Award nomination, marking a significant milestone for Pakistan’s film industry as provincial authorities intensify efforts to promote local cinema on the global stage.
Officials expressed hope that securing an official Oscar nomination would represent a historic achievement for Pakistani filmmaking and strengthen the country’s presence in international cinema.
The development emerged during a meeting of the Sindh Information Department’s Film Board, chaired by Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, where officials reviewed ongoing film projects, industry development plans and strategies to expand the reach of Pakistani productions.
The meeting also assessed progress on partnerships with national and international over-the-top (OTT) streaming platforms, as well as negotiations related to the exhibition and distribution of locally produced films.
The meeting that the first phase of film projects undertaken by the Information Department had been completed successfully.
They added that discussions with streaming platforms and other industry stakeholders were continuing to secure wider distribution for the films in domestic and international markets.
Speaking during the meeting, Memon said the Sindh government remained committed to strengthening the province’s film, cultural and creative industries through sustained policy support.
He said the film industry plays a vital role in promoting Pakistan’s cultural heritage and positive image internationally while also creating employment opportunities, attracting investment and encouraging creative talent.
“Our objective is to develop Sindh into a modern filmmaking hub that enables local filmmakers and artists to showcase their talent on the global stage,” Memon said.
The meeting was attended by Information Secretary Kashif Gulzar Shaikh, Director General Information Moez Pirzada, Director Films Hizbullah Memon and members of the Film Board, along with other government officials.
Participants also discussed proposals for future film projects and measures aimed at expanding the province’s creative sector, reflecting the government’s broader strategy to strengthen Pakistan’s film industry and increase its international visibility.
