Web Desk: Security sources and local officials in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) said normalcy prevailed in Muzaffarabad on Friday despite social media posts claiming unrest, as preparations continued for the next phase of local government elections.
Officials said roads and markets remained open, internet services were functioning, and residents continued daily activities while election preparations proceeded across the city. They added that online claims portraying widespread instability did not reflect the situation on the ground.
According to local officials, a minor altercation between supporters of two political parties was being exaggerated on social media and presented as evidence of broader unrest.
They alleged that misleading content sought to portray isolated incidents as large-scale violence, while authorities maintained that law and order remained under control.
Officials further claimed that, following the completion of elections in Mirpur, individuals opposed to the electoral process had shifted their focus to Muzaffarabad by circulating what they described as false narratives aimed at undermining public confidence.
They also alleged that unverified claims regarding casualties and violence were being disseminated online to create panic and discourage voter participation.
Meanwhile, officials said election-related activities were continuing without disruption and reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring a peaceful environment for voters.
They accused those spreading misinformation of attempting to delay the electoral process and obstruct constitutional procedures. However, Reuters could not independently verify those allegations, and no immediate response was available from individuals or groups accused of involvement.
Authorities urged the public to rely on verified information from official sources and avoid sharing unconfirmed reports on social media.
