After artificial intelligence (AI) made it easier to create fake identities, Facebook is introducing a new Facebook Verified badge to help confirm users’ real identities. The badge will be available to users free of charge.
According to the company, users will only need to record a short video selfie to obtain verification. Facebook will compare the selfie with the profile photos on the account to confirm that it belongs to the same person. The process takes only a few minutes and does not require any subscription fee.
However, the feature will not be available to everyone. To qualify for verification, users must be at least 18 years old, and their accounts must comply with Facebook’s policies by being free from fraud, deception, and misleading activities. If evidence of suspicious or unauthenticated activity is found, the verified badge will not be issued.
Facebook has clarified that, for now, Pages and Professional Mode accounts are not eligible for the program.
According to the company, the feature is being rolled out gradually across different countries and will eventually be expanded to users worldwide. If it is not yet available on your account, it is likely to be introduced in a future phase.
