Officials Unimpressed with Sarfaraz Ahmed’s Performance
Key positions within the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) may soon be handed to former stars Younis Khan and Mohammad Hafeez. PCB officials are reportedly dissatisfied with the performance of head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed, prompting a proposal to appoint Younis Khan as head coach before Pakistan’s tour of the West Indies. If Sarfaraz is given more time, Younis could be assigned another important role within the board. Former all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez has also met with PCB officials and is willing to serve, with a position on the selection committee or as Director of International Cricket likely.
According to details, the PCB is considering bringing former cricket stars into key positions to improve the performance of the national team. Senior board officials have held meetings with several former players in recent days. Pakistan suffered heavy defeats in both Test matches during the tour of Bangladesh, with Sarfaraz Ahmed serving as head coach during the series. Sources say the board is not satisfied with his performance.
Sarfaraz remains under contract with the board, and if he is removed from the coaching position, he is expected to be accommodated elsewhere. Similarly, former captain Mohammad Hafeez recently held an important meeting with PCB officials. He previously served as Team Director during Pakistan’s tours of Australia and New Zealand in 2024.
Following a change in PCB leadership, Hafeez was unable to retain his position and later made several critical public remarks. However, he has now expressed his willingness to work for the betterment of Pakistan cricket, though he reportedly wants full authority in any role he takes. During his brief tenure, Hafeez introduced several significant changes to the national team but did not have enough time to implement his plans fully. He is now being considered for a place on the selection committee or the role of Director of International Cricket, with a decision expected in the coming days.
When contacted, Mohammad Hafeez confirmed meeting PCB officials but declined to share details. He said that, like the board, he wants to see Pakistan cricket improve. Meanwhile, Shan Masood’s future as Test captain appears increasingly uncertain. Following the series defeat to Bangladesh, he has reportedly been advised to resign. However, Masood has requested more opportunities during the upcoming tours of the West Indies and England.
