New market hours announced in Sindh

Web Desk: The provincial government of Sindh has imposed new market timings across the province, ordering shops, bazaars and shopping malls to close early as part of austerity and energy conservation measures, officials said on Thursday.

Under a notification issued on April 10, commercial centers in Karachi and all divisional headquarters will shut at 9 p.m. throughout the week. Meanwhile, businesses in other districts will close by 8 p.m., significantly curtailing evening economic activity.

However, the government has exempted essential services from the restrictions. Tandoors, milk and dairy shops, bakeries, medical stores, laboratories, clinics, hospitals and petrol pumps will continue operating without the new time limits.

In addition, hotels, restaurants and food outlets will be allowed to serve customers between 7 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. Home delivery and takeaway services will remain unrestricted, ensuring continuity for consumers.

Wedding halls and banquet facilities will operate between 8 p.m. and midnight under the revised guidelines.

The Sindh government introduced these measures in response to a worsening global fuel crisis, which has intensified amid rising tensions between the United States, Israel and Iran.

Earlier, Pakistan’s federal government, led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, had announced plans to close markets at 8 p.m. nationwide. However, Sindh authorities delayed implementation while consulting local stakeholders.

Before finalising the decision, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah met representatives of the business community and assured them that market timings would be determined through consultation.

Representatives from key trade bodies, including the Karachi Chamber of Commerce, participated in the discussions, reflecting efforts to balance economic activity with energy-saving goals.

While officials say the policy will help conserve energy and manage fuel shortages, traders remain concerned about reduced business hours and potential financial losses.

Nevertheless, authorities argue that coordinated measures are necessary as Pakistan navigates the broader economic impact of global energy disruptions.
