The Punjab government has officially announced Friday as a public holiday for all government schools. Schools will now remain closed on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
The issued notification states that all government schools will have three weekly holidays, and educational activities will now run from Monday to Thursday. With Friday included as a holiday, teaching will continue for only four days a week.
In Punjab, schools that were closed from March 10 to 31 due to austerity measures and the fuel crisis have reopened today.
During the closure, online classes were conducted to ensure continuity of learning.
Similarly, Government schools in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have also shifted to a four-day working week starting today, April 1, 2026.
Under the new schedule, schools will remain closed on Fridays and Saturdays. Primary schools will operate from 7:30 AM to 1:35 PM, middle schools from 7:30 AM to 2:35 PM, and high and higher secondary schools will dismiss students at 3:00 PM.
The change comes in response to rising fuel prices and ongoing shortages, which have put pressure on the provincial education department to reduce operational costs.
