Govt subsidized fuel policy, execution proposal emerges

⏱ 2 minute read
fuel prices in Pakistan

In a move aimed at supporting low-income citizens, the federal government has proposed a petrol subsidy system that may include a fixed monthly quota for motorcycles.

App under development
According to sources, the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication Pakistan has developed a mobile application to facilitate the subsidy. The app is currently in the testing phase and is expected to be launched for public use soon.

Subsidy mechanism
The proposed subsidy will primarily target two- and three-wheelers, allowing eligible users to purchase petrol at reduced rates. Meanwhile, any increase in global fuel prices may continue to be passed on to other consumers.

Monthly petrol quota
Sources reveal that a proposal is under consideration to allocate up to 20 liters of petrol per month for motorcycles under the subsidy scheme. However, a final decision regarding subsidies for 800cc car owners has not yet been made.

Implementation at petrol pumps
To implement the system, around 12,000 petrol pumps across the country may be equipped with special subsidized nozzles. Each pump is also expected to receive two mobile phones, through which petrol will be dispensed using the app.

What this means
If approved, the initiative could provide significant relief to low-income commuters, especially motorcycle and rickshaw users, while introducing a more targeted and digital approach to fuel subsidies.
